Blauvelt Places
- The Kalmar Nyckel, Wilmington, DE
The Association of Blauvelt Descendants had traditionally believed that Gerrit Hendricksen, the Blauvelt ancestor, arrived at “The Rocks” at Swede’s Landing, Delaware aboard the Kalmar Nyckel in 1638 and then traveled up the Hudson River to Rensselaerswyck. This story was published in The Blauvelt Family Genealogy compiled by Louis L. Blauvelt in 1957. However, subsequent research has clarified that the Gerrit Hendricksen who sailed aboard the Kalmar Nyckel was from Nijkerk, province of Gelderland, in the Netherlands. He was age 15 in 1637 and likely one of the two Gerrit Hendricksens baptized at Nijkerk in 1622. On the other hand, our verified Blauvelt ancestor came from Deventer, province of Overijssel, and was baptized there in 1620.While the current feeling is that our ancestor, Gerrit Hendricksen van Deventer, traveled to New Amsterdam with his relative, Captain Willem Albertsen Blauvelt, on the ship La Garce in 1641, the Kalmar Nyckel remains a valid example of the structure and building used to create merchant ships during that time period. The ABD continues to support this Tall Ship to represent the Scandinavian settlers in New Sweden and the six Dutch settlers it brought to New Netherland in 1638. - 1660 Map of New Amsterdam The house of Lambert Huybertsen Moll, Gerrit’s father-in-law, is at location Q18. Gerrit’s house is beyond the Wall and not shown on the map. The buildings at D2 and D26 are owned by Gerrit Hendricksen from Harderwyck, not our ancestor. Note: the map itself is a large file.
